Today is the day.
David Bowie‘s Lazarus music video is out now. And we have to wait less then 24 hours to can listen ★ (Blackstar) album at its full.
As usual Bowie left you speechless in front of its art and at the same time let you think about so many things because his world is full of meanings that probably neither a lifetime is enough to find them all and that’s probably the reason why Bowie is one of the greatest artists of the last 50 years.
This second music video, always directed by Johan Renck (★ Blackstar) can be a sort of Blackstar second chapter since we find some features of the first music video: a blindfolded Bowie, his gestures, the skull of the astronaut.

There are really deep words and in some way they could reflect the world of fame and how a celebrity can be seen, usually worshipped like a God forgetting he is a human being just like everybody else.

I was living like a king
Then I used up all my money
In the last ten years Bowie moved in New York with the family and probably the words I was living like a king can mean it was pretty hard for media and paparazzi to find him, just for having an interview, before his come-back album The Next Day (2013) it seemed he was disappeared and maybe retired.
Then there’s another part of the video in which we can see Bowie and his gestures, typical of his very first period, when in 60s he used to take classes with Lindsay Kemp (gestures that appear also in Blackstar music video). But it’s a nervous Bowie, also when he writes some notes on that notebook, he thinks about what he can write and he seems scared and anxious.
The female figure and the closet used like a door are two particular elements, I guess they can be a part of our subconscious, the free and rebel side of us, the one who always try to escape but we use to hide because we are afraid of what can happen if we lose control. But at the same time the closet can be only a closet and it’s not a way out so the very last scene could express a rejection towards something and in this way I close in myself.
There are a lot of recurring elements like paranoia and schizophrenia that are present in Bowie’s life and career. In 70s he was a drug abuser and had a lot of paranoia, he used to draw mystical stuff on the floor plus he was always been fascinated and scared about schizophrenia and madness. On his mother side there were some events and he was afraid to have this pathology but at the same time when he went at Gugging in the second half of 70s, an Austrian institute which received people with this kind of events, Bowie understood that they weren’t aware to be artists. He observed them drawing and in what they drew he could se art.
Even though Tony Visconti said with this new album there weren’t elements of the past I still see them, especially from Berlin trilogy era (Low, “HEROES” and Lodger). It’s a such particular period of Bowie’s life, even more deep than Ziggy Stardust era, that everybody remembers but the real turning point of Bowie’s career are just those years, in the second life of 70s when he was addicted to drugs, he was living on th edge and in that moment he was able to say: “I have to move on, I have to change life, I need a new place to live where I can find a new language, a new music language” and then he moved in Europe, before in France and then in Berlin and worked these three wonderful albums. And I think that period will always be dear to him and will always be present in what he will do and maybe more than in The Next Day I see it now, not only in melodies but also in the music videos, a reflection of what Bowie is.
It’s always hard to find the right words for describing Bowie’s art because they sound too obvious. Bowie is beyond anything you can define with human words.
